Overtime pay calculator
What time-and-a-half — or double-time — is actually worth, per week, per month and per year.
Enter your regular hourly rate and your usual overtime hours. Gross, pre-tax figures throughout.
Example on this page's defaults: $25 × 1.5 = $37.50 an overtime hour; 5 hours = $187.50 a week, $812.50 a month on average, $9,750 a year.
General guidance, not a rulebook
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), overtime at not less than one-and-a-half times the regular rate generally applies to hours worked over 40 in a single workweek, for employees who are not exempt. Whether a particular role is exempt depends on duties and salary tests, some states and cities set their own daily-overtime or higher-rate rules, and union agreements and employer policies can be more generous than any legal floor. Double-time (2.0×) is usually a matter of policy, contract, or specific state rules for particular hours rather than a general federal requirement.
Treat the numbers here as a planning estimate. This is general information, not legal or tax advice — if overtime you believe you earned was not paid, your employer's payroll team, a state labour agency, or an employment lawyer is the right next step, in that order of effort.
Why overtime changes offer comparisons
A $25-an-hour role with a reliable five overtime hours a week pays $62,250 across a full year — the equivalent of a $29.93 base rate at straight time, or a salary a little over $62,000 with no overtime at all. Comparing only base rates misses that entirely. Run both sides of any comparison through your likely hours, not the brochure hours.
Frequently asked questions
How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime pay is typically your regular hourly rate × 1.5 (time-and-a-half) for each overtime hour, or × 2.0 for double-time where it applies. Five overtime hours a week at $25 an hour is 5 × $37.50 = $187.50 a week, gross.
Who is entitled to overtime?
In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) generally requires overtime at not less than 1.5× the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for non-exempt employees. Many salaried employees are exempt, and state rules can differ. Eligibility varies — this page is general guidance, not legal advice.
How much is overtime over a year?
Multiply weekly overtime pay by your weeks worked. Five hours a week at time-and-a-half on a $25 rate, across 52 weeks, is $9,750 a year before tax — a large part of total pay that a base-rate comparison misses.
Is overtime pay taxed differently?
Overtime is generally taxed as ordinary income in the US; a paycheck containing overtime may have more withheld because withholding is calculated as if that higher pay were typical. Withholding is not the same as your final tax bill.
