The 26 vs 24 trap
People routinely under-budget by treating a biweekly paycheck as “half a month.” It is not: half a month, twelve times a year, only accounts for 24 paychecks. The other two biweekly paychecks are real money — on a $60,000 salary, two extra $2,307.69 payments. Budgets built on two paychecks a month work fine most months and quietly gain a surplus twice a year; budgets built on the monthly figure ($5,000) are the safer planning basis, with the three-paycheck months treated as a bonus for savings or debt.
In some years a biweekly schedule produces a 27th payday, depending on which weekday payday falls on and how your employer handles it. If that happens, do not annualise from it — your salary has not changed, only the calendar has.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate biweekly pay from salary?
Divide annual salary by 26. There are 26 biweekly periods in a typical year, so a $60,000 salary is $2,307.69 gross every two weeks.
Is biweekly the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly means every two weeks: 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly (twice a month) means 24 paychecks, each slightly larger. On a $60,000 salary, biweekly is $2,307.69 and semi-monthly is $2,500.00.
Why do some months have three biweekly paychecks?
Because 26 paychecks do not divide evenly into 12 months. Two months a year contain three biweekly paydays — useful for budgeting, since most monthly bills are still only due once in those months.
What is biweekly pay for $25 an hour?
At 40 hours a week, $25 an hour is $1,000 a week and $2,000 per biweekly paycheck, gross — $52,000 across 26 paychecks.
