Frequently asked questions

The short answers, with the working shown. All figures gross, pre-tax, at 40 hours × 52 weeks unless a question says otherwise.

How do I convert salary to hourly pay?

Divide your annual salary by the total hours you are paid for in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that total is 2,080 hours, so hourly = salary ÷ 2,080. A $60,000 salary is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour, gross.

What is $50,000 a year per hour?

$24.04 an hour at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year ($50,000 ÷ 2,080), before tax. If you work fewer paid weeks or different hours, the hourly figure changes — adjust the weeks and hours in the calculator.

Is the 2,080-hour shortcut always right?

No. It assumes exactly 40 paid hours every week of the year. It overstates your rate if you regularly work 45–50 hours on salary, and understates it if some weeks are unpaid. That is why this calculator lets you set your real hours and weeks worked.

Are these figures before or after tax?

Before tax — gross pay. Take-home pay depends on federal, state and local tax, plus deductions for health insurance, retirement and other benefits, none of which a simple conversion can know.

How do I convert hourly pay to an annual salary?

Multiply hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks the multiplier is 2,080, so $30 an hour is $62,400 a year, gross.

What is $25 an hour annually?

$52,000 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, before tax. At 37.5 hours it is $48,750, and at 30 hours it is $39,000 — hours matter as much as the rate.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime pay is typically your regular hourly rate × 1.5 (time-and-a-half) for each overtime hour, or × 2.0 for double-time where it applies. Five overtime hours a week at $25 an hour is 5 × $37.50 = $187.50 a week, gross.

Who is entitled to overtime?

In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) generally requires overtime at not less than 1.5× the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for non-exempt employees. Many salaried employees are exempt, and state rules can differ. Eligibility varies — this page is general guidance, not legal advice.

How do I calculate biweekly pay from salary?

Divide annual salary by 26. There are 26 biweekly periods in a typical year, so a $60,000 salary is $2,307.69 gross every two weeks.

Is biweekly the same as twice a month?

No. Biweekly means every two weeks: 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly (twice a month) means 24 paychecks, each slightly larger. On a $60,000 salary, biweekly is $2,307.69 and semi-monthly is $2,500.00.
