The standard conversion table
Most salary-to-hourly answers you will see use one shared shortcut: a full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. It is a useful starting point — and it is exact only when 2,080 really is your paid-hours total. The table below uses that standard basis so you can compare like for like.
| Annual salary | Hourly | Daily (8h) | Weekly (40h) | Biweekly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $14.42 | $115.38 | $576.92 | $1,153.85 | $2,500.00 |

Standard basis: 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 paid hours a year. Gross, pre-tax. Daily assumes an 8-hour day.
Why your real rate may be different
Unpaid time off shrinks the denominator. A salary paid over 52 weeks but worked over 50 is not the same hourly rate as one paid and worked over 52. If two weeks are unpaid, set Weeks worked to 50: the same annual pay divided by fewer hours is a higher rate for the time you are actually at work — and a reminder that those unpaid weeks still have to be budgeted for.
Salaried hours often drift upward. If a role is priced at 40 hours but regularly takes 48, the effective hourly rate falls even though the salary stays flat. Re-run the numbers at your honest hours before you compare a salaried offer with an hourly one.
Part-time and non-standard schedules need their own maths. At 37.5 hours a week a $60,000 salary is $30.77 an hour, not $28.85. At 30 hours it is $38.46. The annual number alone hides all of that.
An honest comparison: salary is not just hourly × 2,080
Converting pay is the easy part. Comparing two ways of being paid is harder, because the hourly number leaves out things that can be worth thousands a year. Before you decide that one offer beats another, put rough values on:
- Paid time off. Paid vacation and holidays are paid non-working hours. An hourly role with no paid leave may need a meaningfully higher rate to match a salaried role with four weeks paid.
- Overtime. Many hourly roles pay 1.5× after 40 hours in a week; many salaried roles pay nothing extra for the same extra hours. Model your likely extra hours on the overtime calculator instead of guessing.
- Benefits. Employer health-insurance contributions, retirement matching, and payroll taxes borne by an employer do not show up in either a salary or an hourly figure, but they are real compensation.
- Stability and gaps. Hourly and contract work can have unpaid gaps between assignments. A rate that looks higher across 52 paid weeks may look different across 46.
Our guide to comparing two offers walks through putting those pieces into one side-by-side total.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert salary to hourly pay?
Divide your annual salary by the total hours you are paid for in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that total is 2,080 hours, so hourly = salary ÷ 2,080. A $60,000 salary is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour, gross.
What is $50,000 a year per hour?
$24.04 an hour at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year ($50,000 ÷ 2,080), before tax. If you work fewer paid weeks or different hours, the hourly figure changes — adjust the weeks and hours in the calculator.
Is the 2,080-hour shortcut always right?
No. It assumes exactly 40 paid hours every week of the year. It overstates your rate if you regularly work 45–50 hours on salary, and understates it if some weeks are unpaid. That is why this calculator lets you set your real hours and weeks worked.
Are these figures before or after tax?
Before tax — gross pay. Take-home pay depends on federal, state and local tax, plus deductions for health insurance, retirement and other benefits, none of which a simple conversion can know.
How do I go from hourly to salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then by weeks per year. At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year, gross.
What is biweekly pay for a $60,000 salary?
$2,307.69 gross per biweekly paycheck ($60,000 ÷ 26). Biweekly is not the same as twice a month: there are 26 biweekly periods in a year but only 24 semi-monthly periods.
Does unpaid vacation change my hourly rate?
On a “paid hours only” view, yes. If 2 of your 52 weeks are unpaid, you are paid for 50 weeks. A $60,000 salary over 40 × 50 = 2,000 hours is $30.00 an hour for the weeks you actually work. Set Weeks worked to 50 to see it.
